Overcoming and overachieveing?

I started a small Book series called "The Five Ancestors" by Jeff Stone

In the first book The Main character's point of view is from a young monk named Fu, which means Tiger in Cantonese Chinese. Theres a point where he is separated from his other blood brothers being only at the age of 15 to fend for himself. In the chapter I am currently reading Fu has heard the cry of a Real tger in pain. Rushing to where he had heard the beast, he had found a mother Tiger caught in a trap. Furious he engages them in combat, thinking only of the Mother tiger in danger, and had now noticed a baby Tiger cub as well. He beat down the two hunters and after the third had killed the mother tiger he rushed twords the third and knock out both him and His 9 year old son.
Sure he had overcome the poachers and all but was it necisary to go that far? After he had come to his senses he had found the father of the boy shouting at him to leave him be and let him tend to his son. Fu may have been able to really save the baby tiger cub but there has to be a point where someone has to stop "Overcoming their obsticles" right? It's sad because I've noticed the ones who go above and beyond have made more problems for others, but for the others that no one listens to...
